Computers targeted by Chinese hackers
Hackers from China compromised four computers in the offices of a local congressman in 2006, as well as equipment belonging to other members and committees.
Rep. Frank Wolf, R-10th, took to the floor of the House of Representatives on Wednesday to call attention to the apparent failure of security measures in the House and call for action.
Wolf, a frequent and vocal critic of the People’s Republic for its record on human rights abuses, spying on U.S. companies and tacit support of genocide in Darfur, said his criticism of China was the reason he was targeted.
Starting in 2006, computers in Wolf’s office that contained, among other things, the names of Chinese dissidents and other sensitive information were compromised and completely open to hackers based in China, according to Wolf, citing information from the FBI.
All of the Windows-based computers were cleaned of spyware by congressional computer technicians and returned to Wolf’s office.
